One of the most powerful events in your life is when you shift from having jobs to having a career. A job is something you do to make money. A career is something you do because you're passionate about it. We are designed to live a purposeful life. When we feel like we are doing something worthwhile we are healthier and more creative. As a result everything works better and we have more success in all aspects of our lives. Athletes often face the crisis of a career ending injury. Their ability to find a new career is the difference between a life that is empty and difficult or one that is full. A career in helping people to feel or look better is extremely gratifying. Whether you are helping a person with a chronic injury or disease or helping them overcome and appearance issue, the work you do is fundamental to their future well-being. When you are helping people on this significant level they will have deep appreciation for what you do for them. Imagine working in a setting where you are constantly being thanked for what you do and people look forward to seeing you. In fact, in many cases, what you do may be the best thing that's happening in their lives. For most people a career in massage, polarity, aesthetics or cosmetology is a life changing experience. Whether they are working in a clinic, spa or salon setting or have their own private practice or business, doing work that has a profound affect on others is a joy. People find that they are often healthier and more productive than their friends and they are far happier than most of the people who are commuting to jobs that they dislike. The difference is profound.

What Makes a Career?

A career almost always starts with having specialized knowledge that gives you an important role to play in the community. This knowledge sets you on a path where you can apply your unique talents rather than be a commodity that can be moved around easily. Working in a clerical, retail sales or other low level service positions lacks basic security because the jobs can be done by many people. However, with specialized knowledge and experience you have a value that's not easily replaced. Many careers also entail a professional license. This takes your value to an even higher level. Having a license means that only other licensed professionals can do what you do. The fewer the licenses the more unique and secure your position. Even if you work for yourself, a license means that there is recognition that not just anyone can do the work you're doing. It protects the investment you have made in your education as well as shows the public that what you do requires expertise. But the biggest thing that makes a career is your passion for what you do. Working in a field that you believe in is very different than working in retail or an office environment. It sparks your creativity and energizes you just by doing the work. For many people, having a career becomes one of the most important aspects of their life and the thought of not having the career they love is impossible to imagine.

Next Steps?

Let yourself dream. That's right. Take the time to imagine what it would be like to have a career you love. Think about what you love to do and that will help guide you towards what's next. If you love help people to feel better or more beautiful or if you have always been fascinated by the healing process or performance enhancement, there are many ways to work these into careers. Or if you have had your own personal experience of being healed or having felt the impact of a change in your appearance, these could also lead you towards a career that is based on these experiences. After you gain clarity about things that might interest you, visit some schools that offer what you're interested in. By visiting the school you will get to meet other people that are already in the career you imagine may be good for you. When you meet them, hear what they're doing and learn more about the curriculum you will get a much better sense if this is the career for you. You will feel it inside as either a desire to move forward or a clear signal that it's not what you are really interested in. If you have a positive feeling about the work and the people who are in the field, the next steps are the easiest. Ask the school for help in finding a schedule and program that meets your needs. If financing is an issue the school will help you with finding solutions for this as well. The important thing is to take it a step at a time. Don't get overwhelmed by thoughts of the licensing, the length of the program or the expense. Just take it one step at a time and before you know it, you will be graduating and starting your professional career.
